Ever since I have been in the classroom, I have been telling my students this (I got it from my cooperating teacher when I was a student teacher... Thanks Lynda):
It helps with those students who just want to "get 'er done"... and fast...
It's always a good reminder to S L O W down and do your personal best work!

How do you encourage your students to do their personal best work?

OMGosh! You have totally made my heart happy!!! I have 6 boys who rush and race through everything - their work, who can get to the bathroom faster, who can line up the fastest, and so on! I am printing this out and hanging it up tomorrow!!! Thank you! :)

Love it and will be posting it right above my 'Shining Work Box' where they place "finished work".

I love this! My 2nd graders are very competitive and I hope this will motivate them to focus on doing their best instead of finishing first. Thanks :)

ReplyDeleteI use the sugar cookie award idea from First Grader at last. My class loves it and it really encouraged them to try their best! :)

I always tell them this isn't a race and I don't have a trophy for them. I use the story the tortoise and the hare. Slow and Steady wins the race. We refer back to our work with this story a lot.
ReplyDeleteHe Lindsey,
ReplyDeleteI have a question - your little words for addition and words for subtraction - is there any way to make that plus and minus sign small so we could tape it to the corner of a desk? I work with some low babies in 1st and 2nd and I find myself saying "how many more means we???" every. single. day. Is that something you can do or should I try it on my own? Let me know what you think.
:)
Aww, this is adorable. Lynda's my mother in law and we just read this post together as she's visiting me in AZ right now. She's the best teacher huh?-and the best grandma!

This is perfect. Thanks for sharing.

I was wondering if you could possibly (pretty pretty please) make a copy with multi-cultural children? Classes at our school are very mixed; this does not look like my class at all (for any of my 11 years teaching).

@Terri: I am sorry, but all freebies are "as is"! Thanks for understanding! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this! Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHave you read the book "Me First"? It wonderful for teaching about not trying to always be the first one and it is also very funny. I always read it the first week of school.
If you get the chance, I would love for you to hop over and check out the Way to Go jar that we are going to use to help celebrate each other. =)
