second year, second grade

So the principal at my school decided I was smart enough for second grade!

As most of you know, I will be looping with my firsties to second.
Same classroom. Same class. Different curriculum (aka first grade on steroids).

Since school starts in 18 days (YIKES!), I need to start gathering some second grade resources.
I would love to know about all second grade blogs, websites, etc.
If you have taught, or teach second grade, what are some of the favorite things you did?

Thanks in advance, you guys are seriously my best resources!

I taught 1st and 2nd combined last year. You'll enjoy it. The hardest things for my kids was learning that a quarter after 10 meant 10:15. Because a quarter is worth 25 cents. But, they all mastered it eventually!

    Best of luck!

  6. Ive been teaching 2nd for 5 years and it is my favorite! My favorite thing to teach is Ancient Civilizations. We study Ancient Egypt and China. The kids spend the unit learning about and making their own artifacts and then put on a museum for other classes and family where they get to be the curators! Check out my blog:

  7. I was in the same situation last year. I taught first grade for 9 years and then I was moved to second grade. I asked to loop with my current first graders up to second grade and it made the transition very easy! I didn't have to learn new students, just the new curriculum. I found it to be a very easy transition, the students are just a bit more independent. Enjoy!

  10. How awesome to loop with your kids. They'll already know you and your rules...that will cut out so much of the back to school procedure/rules/getting to know you stuff and let you get down to business! :-)

  13. I am also looping. Hope to find many ideas. The pre-planning has been easy because I already know what they can/can't do. My fear is that I make it too easy, since I was in first for 10 years!

  24. I just finished my first year teaching second grade (thank goodness we only have to be first year teachers once!) and it was AMAZING! I had a huge range of abilities so it was great to have the opportunity to teach on such a wide spectrum. Trust me, you will love it.

As someone above mentioned, Mrs. Lemons' blog is fantastic, and the Second Grade Teachers Club is also a great resource too. I have also searched "Second Grade" on pinterest and come up with a lot of good resources!

Not much on there yet as I have a whole lot of 1/2 completed lessons in the works and am still waiting to get into my classroom, but lots of pics to come!

  31. hey heyyy!!! I also looped from first to second last year!!! My biggest advice... try not to love them as much as you want to! My kids were so excited to see me and be in my class again, as was I to have them again, and eventually we turned into a 'mother-child' relationship, and some of them lost that teachery respect that kids have. Half way through the year I had to restructure my classroom management and really buckle down on them! Once we got that out of the way, everything was perfect. It was just a little tough when we both got comfortable with eachother! Good luck this year! YOU WILL TOTALLY LOVE IT!!! I don't think I will ever love another class as much as I love my looped babies! <3
